Q&A: What is the difference between Advance Auto brand oil and more expensive brands, like Pennzoil, Valvoline, etc?
I change my own oil (2007 Toyota Corolla) and use 10W-30 or 5W-30, changing it every 5000 miles (when the maintenance light comes on). I have always used Pennzoil, but considered trying the Advance Auto brand last I was at the store, but hesitated because it is significantly cheaper than the other brands, like less when buying the gallon jugs. So, what is the difference, if there is one, between the store brand and brands like Pennzoil, Mobil, Valvoline, etc.?

If you change your oil a lot, like every 3,000 miles, you shouldn’t have any issues using cheaper oils. If you rarely change your oil, you should always use premium oils. The cheaper oils can break down quicker due to heat. Other differences are in oil additives.

Look on the back of the bottle or jug. As long as the oil meets the current API spec (API SM is current), any oil will perform about the same.
The benefit of a premium oil like Pennzoil is better additives to reduce sludge build up and keep your engine cleaner than an economy product like Advance oil (made by Warren Oil I think).
For oil changes 5000 miles or less, you can use the Advance oil without issues. At Walmart a 5 quart jug of Pennzoil is .50, so the price difference between a premium oil and an economy oil is not that great. But, its your money.

Advanced Auto oil is made by Havoline.(Texaco) It is fine and meets all requirements for your car. It will not break down faster than name brand oil. ………………..md

unless you drive in very hot weather and do alot of divring,i wouldnt recommend 5w30 weight,if you do normal divring,like to work and such,i recommend 10w30 weight and i never use anything but havoline,i do not want another brand in my jeep that i drive but havoline.But what i would do if i were you is look in your owners manual,close to the back and it will give you the viscosity oil to use in your jeep,and how many quarts too.
