Question: What are some affordable low-carb brands of wet food?
I want to feed my new cat wet food that has few by-products, but am worried that budgetary constraints might make that difficult. Thanks in advance.
giving my cat, a carnivore, nutritious fruits and veggies, is not a priority
Any BRAND recommendations?

Pictures have nothing to do with the content!!!!!!

Natural Balance is around per can. Wellness is around .35. These are Milwaukee prices, at an independently owned pet store. It’s possible both would be less expensive at Petco where both are sold, and of course buying by the case should one work out for you, is cheaper.
I think Evo is around .35 as well.

Go to the pet store, and read the ingredients on the cans. The carbs shouldn’t be much of an issue unless you’ve got a “chunks and gravy” type food. Those will contain a gluten, probably wheat gluten. Many will say something like “chicken and rice” but the rice is a very small part of the mixture. By-products will be clearly labeled. There are very acceptable foods out there at all prices. Get a variety of brands and flavors, and see what your cat likes and doesn’t like. Cats respond to flavor and texture in foods, so you will need to do some experimenting. Once you determine what your cat will eat, you can save money by buying it by the case.
Popular brands at my house: Wellness (chicken), Merrick, and Weruva (shredded chicken). Other brands eaten but not the favorites: Natural Balance (Ultra), Solid Gold, California Natural (Chicken and Rice), Newman’s Own, and EVO. I rotate among all of the brands so they get variety (and also not in a snit if we’re out of the favorite). The mainstay of their diet is Wellness canned though.

lol yes it is a priority that ur cat has greens in there diet but not every day once a week….that is why cats crave for grass… it helps there digestive system… as for low carbs i am not sure… i get the Meow Mix and then Wal Mart brand and alternate it from day to day then once a week i will give my cat friskies which has greens in it and give him that….

whiskas are good, they do wet and dry food. I normally buy both of them and give them dry biscuits in the day, and wet meat at their dinner time ![]()
hope you buy whiskas (they are not expensive at all!)

we use Purina Pro Plan Kitten can–it is .80 cents for a 3 ounce can in Missouri at Petco, not sold in grocery stores..

First of all, you need to define by-products. Sure, beaks and nails are by products, but so are other organ products that people do not eat, but your cat would if she were catching her own prey. Cats have a short digestive system, and they need enzymes from the food they eat to help them digest their food. Enzyme rich organs include lungs, intestines, stomach, etc. and many would consider them by-products, as we don’t normally eat those organs. Also, if they caught a mouse, they would eat the stomach almost first, and a mouse eats lots of carbs.
Look at the label, and you want meat as the first ingredient. Of course, in wet food, often water is the first ingredient. As far as by-products, you normally get what you pay for. A low priced food will have low value by-products.
I have posted a link on an article from the Cornell Vet school which discusses cat foods. They naturally do not make recommendations as to brands, but discuss what to look for in foods.

Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It’s completely species inappropriate.
All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they don’t need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol’ house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats.
So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.
Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), constipation, bladder stones, kidney stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions.
Overall, wet is all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats.
I recommend varying the diet with a constant rotation of 2 to 4 different brands of canned foods that your cat enjoys. If you do this, and allow your cat the same assortment they would have in nature when eating mice, bugs, birds and rabbits, your cat’s digestive system won’t be so sensitive and you won’t have to run around looking for a specific brand when your store is out. You will have a nice variety to choose from instead.
Canned foods I recommend you consider for your rotation:
